Community@Heart recently organized a Parenting Class focusing on the ‘Essentials Of Discipline’ on 2 August 2008. More than 25 parents attended this class held on a Saturday in ECF Puchong.

What was highlighted during this class was a few basic concepts of discipline:

- Why Children Need Discipline
- Irresponsibility vs Defiance
- Anger vs Action
- Finding Balance In Discipline
- Compliant vs Defiant
- The Strong Willed Adolescent

Devoted : Parents picking up
pointers on disciplining children
with love.

This main aim of this class which was free to the public was to help parents relate to their children and discipline them with the right methods and at the right time. As can be seen from the following comments left by some of the parents, this class was indeed helpful.

• Mr & Mrs Matthew Chang: “We learnt about ‘loving’ discipline and defining clear boundaries.”
• Jane Loke, Financial Planner: “It is about understanding and being able to differentiate the child’s behaviour.”
• Mella, Housewife: “It is knowing how to balance between love and control.”
• Mr & Mrs Charles Teoh: “We have learnt how to discipline children at the right time and using the right ‘language’.”

As discipline is only one aspect of parenting, do be on the look out for more classes with relevant topics in the near future.
